An Architect's Own Family Off-Grid Sustainable Home
Melbourne architect, Jerry Wolveridge of Wolveridge Architects, bought the rural property of his clients, and after a study of local agricultural buildings, decided to design a simple, timber-clad pitched off-grid home. Jerry went a step further, adopting the construction methods of Australian sheds, using steel portal frames and avoiding typical "home" materials.
This off-grid home relies heavily on a smart plan arrangement, with the house being long and thin, allowing for optimal cross ventilation which helps during the hot Australian summers. To help heat the home during the chilly Victorian winters, there is a wood-fire boiler and radiator grills and panels. Jerry includes his children into the off-grid living, having guessing games revolving around the internal temperatures.

How You Can Design Your Home to be More Sustainable
How do you achieve a sustainable home? Is it the orientation, materials, and all the technology, such as solar panels, or is it simply doing less? Sustainable architecture is about working with the environment, not against it, to reduce its negative impact on the environment.
In this video, I talk about five key design principles for a sustainable home, from passive design to materials, and how sustainability does not need to be complex; but rather, a simple approach can result in your home being cheaper to run, healthier, more comfortable to live in, and is respectful of the climate and kinder to the planet.
Keep in mind that I talk about these design principles broadly. If you wish to apply these to your own future home design, you will need to consider things like where you live, cont...

Self sustainable zero waste productive home in Melbourne demonstrates future | Gardening Australia
Costa is visiting a temporary installation on the banks of the Yarra River, the latest iteration of Joost Baker’s experimental constructions; “Greenhouse”. Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/GA-subscribe
While it is perched on the edge of the CBD, it is aimed squarely at homeowners everywhere, “in the future we will all live like this” says Joost.
The 3-storey house is a humble 87m2, about ¼ of the size of an average Aussie dwelling, but it has big ambitions, to demonstrate a productive, sustainable & no-waste future. “Our food system one of the most wasteful, polluting things on the planet – the way we grow our food but also transport and sell it. I wanted to create a house that was shelter for people but could also grow food and create energy – our cities have so much potential”.

How to build a sustainable house using natural building materials
Location: Panchkula
Architect: Jitesh Malik, Studio Aureole
After successfully running the Aaananda Permaculture Project near Chandigarh, Manisha Lath Gupta and her family realised that it was time to live in the environment where they grow their produce. Living with nature meant living in a home built using natural materials. Aanandaa sustainable house is built using sustainable materials like rammed earth, stone, lime, brick, and traditional roofing systems. The natural building materials were sourced locally and Manisha also ensured that they hired local crafts persons. Some other features of the house include the underground cellar to store the produce, rainwater harvesting, waste water management and a biodigester.
The sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is designed and directed b...

Inside a Unique and Sustainable Modern House with a Japanese Inspired Courtyard (House Tour)
A modern house, Fitzroy Bridge House is a work of collaboration led by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design. Featuring a glass bridge – from which the project receives its name – the home emerges as a considered and personal dwelling that celebrates its older architectural elements.
Located in the southern Fitzroy heritage precinct, Fitzroy Bridge House sits an enviable two kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. The residence occupies a long, thin site and is comprised of distinct pavilions, encapsulating both the pre-existing architecture and the work of the modern house.
As Fitzroy Bridge House is situated in a heritage overlay, the exterior of the home could not be altered in relation to the front two rooms. Entering the home, residents move through the Victorian-style environments before r...

On the outskirts of Tamil Nadu, and a 90-minute drive away from Bengaluru, is a village called Shoolagiri that is known for its eco-friendly community called Sanctity Ferme. To promote their vision of a natural ecosystem, sustainable model homes were planned for the residents. Flintstone6 is first of many such eco-friendly prototypes, designed to blend with the scenic untouched landscapes of the region.
#GlassInDesign is a series presented by Saint Gobain (@SaintGobainIndiaGlassBusiness ) in association with #Buildofy
Design and construction during the thick of the pandemic posed a limitation that eventually became Flintstone6’s strength – the use of minimal materials all obtained from nature itself. It is part of the landscape itself. Each space in this 1935 sq.ft. home is connected to the outdoors, with natural cross ventilation and a dynamic palette of light and shadow patterns constant throughout the day.
To download the full PDF eBook of Flintstone6 House in Shoolagiri with floor plans, materials used, construction techniques and so much more, please visit:
https://www.buildofy.com/projects/flintstone6-house-shoolagiri-tamilnadu?utm_source=YT-D_Flintstone6House_FullVideo_Shoolagiri_Tamilnadu&utm_medium=YT-D_Flintstone6House_FullVideo_Shoolagiri_Tamilnadu&utm_campaign=YT-D_Flintstone6House_FullVideo_Shoolagiri_Tamilnadu&utm_id=YT-D_Flintstone6House_FullVideo_Shoolagiri_Tamilnadu
The poured earth debris walls, inverted stair room, and washrooms inside the bedrooms are some key highlights of the project. Principal Architect walks us through the home, insightfully breaking down the material palette as well as the design challenges that give this sustainable home an edge over most in this country.

If you wish to apply these to your own future home design, you will need to consider things like where you live, context, climate, access, budget, personal needs, etc.

Every available space is involved in growing food, and every available nutrient in the house harvested to do it.
Potted gardens fill both balconies, growing everything from pumpkins to chickpeas. Food grade plastic 44-gallon drums are positioned everywhere, as soil-filled pots acting as ballast for the house and as wicking beds.
The house is also running Aquaponics systems, with fish, yabbies and fresh-water mussels contributing nutrients to 2 large grow beds. “more than enough to feed a family all the greens they need”. Joost reckons that they are much easier than people think, particularly when you are raising things like yabbies
The mushroom wall is both an aesthetic and edible addition to the house, positioned in the base of the vertical green house, in the central stairwell. Humidity for the mushies, is harvested from the shower and the hot water system – nothing is wasted.
Of course, general waste is also being converted into fertiliser & fuel. They are feeding veggie scraps to crickets. These crickets are then used in the kitchen to make felafel!
While Joost is passionate about natural ecosystems, in this designed ecosystem people are integral. “Without them, the nutrients needed for the system do not exist. It needs to be managed”. The people in this case are Matt stone & Jo Barret, award winning chefs who grew their own gardening skills running their zero-waste kitchen at Oakridge wines.
They have been on the tools throughout the house construction, and now are now living in the house, eating only what they grow on site. They are very passionate about the project and about the ethos. Matt - “When you cook this way, you just want to do more. As a chef, I want things to be delicious, and the most delicious food is the most ethically produced food”.
But Joost hopes the ideas here will help to fuel others for the future. “I don’t see that everything we are doing here is the only way to do it, I want it to be a catalyst.

The sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is designed and directed by the Studio Aureole team lead by Architect Jitesh Malik. Studio Aureole is a conscious practice, often bridging the artificial divides of product, interior, architecture and landscape. Architectural practice at Studio Aureole is about creating spaces that have the power to re-connect us with nature, with ourselves and with our communities. Their definition of sustainable goes beyond materials to include the social and ecological fabric that we inhabit. At Aanandaa, their approach has been to bring together an environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design sensibility and a socio-cultural imagination that fosters collaboration.

This family's ecological home is packed with sustainable features, including straw bale walls, natural materials and finishes, composting toilets, grey water plant beds, a green roof, a solar hot water heater, earthen floors, and a lot more! They manage their forest and use the crowded, dead, or dying trees they remove as firewood to heat their home and they mill any quality wood to be used for projects around the house and property. They also grow and raise a lot of food, including fruit and nut trees, a vegetable garden, a greenhouse, and laying hens for eggs.
You can find out more about Evolve Builders Group and their climate-conscious construction here:
https://evolvebuilders.ca/
The home was designed by Martin Lieffhebber and includes sleeping pods at one end, an atrium in the middle to capture passive solar energy, and a living and kitchen area at the other end.
After 18 years of living in this natural home and working on multiple green building projects, Chris thinks that Passive House (Passivhaus) is where the industry is heading because it drastically reduces the amount of energy needed to heat and cool a home (often by more than 70%) and it can be done anywhere (urban and rural).
We've made a few videos about Passive House if you want to check them out here:

Entering the home, residents move through the Victorian-style environments before reaching the rear architecture of the modern house that features a refined internal courtyard settled into the dining room interior design.
Connecting two pavilions, the glass bridge forms the focal point of the modern house. The bold feature provides a view down to the manicured garden in the Japanese-inspired courtyard – a fine work of landscape architecture requested by the client and executed by Robyn Barlow.
A product of collaboration, Fitzroy Bridge House is closely connected to the client. Warm, inviting and personal, the modern house expresses its own built narrative, enabling the client to retell the story of its creation for years to come.
